Infamous Little Moons Mochi
If you’re anything like me, you’ll have fallen into many a rabbit hole on TikTok. Honestly, I swear I open the app and all of a sudden 2 hours have gone by and it’s now dark outside, haha!
We’ve seen it all on Tiktok, from the crazes of ‘pancake cereal’ to ‘Dalgona coffee’ to the more recent ‘wrap hack’, and now every 3rd video on the app is someone reviewing Little Moons mochi.
Ok, maybe not quite that many reviews, but a lot of my FYP is taste tests of the Little Moons vegan ice cream. I don’t know about you but the more I see these videos the more I am dying to get my hands on these!
Honestly, wish I’d thought of bringing these to the UK. The owner of Little Moons must be raking it in right now with all the TikTok hype!
What are Little Moons?
Ok, we’ve all see these colourful little balls of ice cream on the internet and the shocked faces of everyone doing a taste test. But what exactly is Mochi anyway?
Mochi is a traditional Japanese rice cake often made for Japanese New Year. It is made with a mix of ‘mochigome’ a short-grain glutinous rice plus other ingredients including water, sugar and cornstarch. These ingredients then form a paste which can be moulded into shapes.
Mochi is a popular Japanese sweet that can be served as a confectionary or in ice cream, much like the Little Moons Mochi we are seeing all over the UK. Or rather not seeing because they seem to flying off the selves like toilet roll back in March 2020.
In short, Mochi are colourful cake balls make with sweet, soft and chewy rice. Cute, right?
The ‘Mochi’ part of the Little Moons is actually the coating which surrounds the soft ice cream filling. See picture below for those gorgeous layers!
Tiktok has seen more things going viral than ever before. These trends might be quick to come and go but Little Moons are by no means ‘new’ to the UK.
In fact, Little Moons was launched in 2010 by a brother and sister duo, we love a good family business! Howard and Vivien Wong had a dream to bring Japanese sweet mochi to the rest of the world. They popularised this traditional sweet by combining it with ice cream and pairing it with some classic flavours to tickle our western taste buds, and oh boy did they nail it!

Which Little Moons Mochi are vegan friendly?
Of course, I wouldn’t write a post on Virtually Vegan without telling you exactly which flavours are suitable for vegans.
According to the Little Moons website, ”Soya is present in ALL products. Our mochi ice cream is not vegan apart from our Vegan Chocolate and Tropical flavours. Our mochi is not halal accredited”.
Look out for the mochi flavours: purple ‘Smooth & Indulgent Belgian Chocolate‘ & pink ‘Totally Tropical, Passionfruit & Mango‘, to make sure you get the vegan options!
Why are Little Moons so hard to get hold of?
Tiktok is mostly to blame, or maybe to thank depending on how you look at this, on the new mochi UK trend. TikTok Influencers and just about anyone with a smartphone or camera who can get their hands on the ice cream is uploading a review to the internet. Causing a surge in sales of over 700% for the brand since last December. Crazy right?!
The hashtag #LittleMoons now has (at time of writing) over 120 million views, that’s insane! It’s really no surprise that retail shops are struggling to keep them stocked up on our shelves.
Even if you don’t consume any TikTok, you’ll sure to have heard about these Little Moons in the news or from friends. Their surge in popularity has trended far beyond social media.
Where can you find Little Moons Mochi in the UK?
Sometimes I wish the Little Moons Mochi fairy would just drop us all round a little ball of vegan Mochi ice cream on our doorsteps so we could all try these out for ourselves and know what the hype is all about.
They are typically priced at £4.50 for 6 mochi, in retail shops.
If you want to search for your nearest supermarket who are stocking the mochi ice cream UK then head to the Little Moons website and search mochi near me.
Little Moons are stocked online at Ocado, Waitrose, Tesco and on Amazon Fresh.
They also stock instore at some Wholefoods, As Nature Intended, Harrods, and Selfridges&co stores. And we have also heard on the grapevine that Lidl is also stocking them, although this isn’t listed on Little Moons website, it may be worth checking out. I’ll race you there!
Lucky enough to get Deliveroo where you live? They actually do have a mochi fairy who can deliver the mochi straight to your door! This is available through Honi Poke, Farmshop and Sushi Daily.
It might also be worth checking in your local Asian supermarket. We found Oriental Supermarket Fodal Mile End, London, is stocking freezer fulls of them! They are also available on Deliveroo.
Are Little Moons actually worth the hype?
It seems like Little Moons are the new Marmite. Reviewers reactions seem to go one way or the other. With few people thinking they are just ‘okay’.
From first bite the review is either ‘wow, insane, you must try these!’ or ‘what the hell is this? Thank you, next!’. Which is all the more reason for people to be seeking them out to do their own taste test.
With the concept of mochi and it’s unique texture being new to many people in the UK it’s no surprise there are such dividing opinions.
On the whole, of the two vegan options, the tropical one is a firm fan favourite. The chocolate flavour, however, seems to be more controversial.
A review from the hilarious Mark Ferris on his YouTube channel suggested they were good but not quite what he had hoped they would be [Watch his full video on YouTube for a super entertaining review].
Without naming names, I have seen some views stating the chocolate mochi ice cream is ‘rank’ and ‘gross’. So there are definitely some strong options on these mochi balls.
Georgia and Fariha had this to say about the mochi they tried:
”Little Moons Mochi have created something real special… chewy mochi balls filled with the creamiest ice cream… I can’t decide which one is my favourite. Either way, 10/10 recommend these such a lovely lil snack or dessert!”
Review from @Veganpixie_
”Mango flavoured mochi in particular is gorgeous but with the addition of Ice cream in the middle?! No wonder it’s selling out everywhere. Some flavours are definitely better than others but these soft chewy sweet treats are definitely worth a try!”
Review from @Dinewithfari
