The Best Vegan Dessert
(no particular order)
1. Feed Me Vegan
Chocolate Pie
Find these in Tesco, Waitrose. RRP £3.50.
The taste of this chocolate pie really exceeded my expectations! It is super creamy and melts in the mouth. And not bad value for a full family size dessert.
It is also not too coconut-y, which is great as I find a lot of desserts with coconut end up all tasting the same. This pie would be epic served warm with dairy-free ice cream.
Other options in this range:
Key Lime Pie, Tiramisu and Mango Cheesecake
2. English Cheesecake Company
Cookies & Cream Vegan Slices
Find these in Waitrose. RRP £3.90.
These ‘Oreo’ cheesecake style desserts really do deserve all the hype they get! I can’t fault them for taste or texture.
They are a little on the pricey side at just under £4 for 2 portions, but seriously worth it for a treat, and they will certainly impress your non-vegan friends. ⠀
3. The Coconut Collaborative
Melt in the Middle Chocolate Pudding
Find these in Waitrose, Sainsbury’s. RRP £3.
If you love RICH and super CHOCOLATEY desserts, then this will be right up your alley! The flavour and texture are amazing. Plus the ratio of melty middle to the cake is perfect.
Would be delicious with a serving of vegan ice cream, to compliment the warm pudding.
Don’t be fooled by the size of the box, as I was expecting the puddings to be bigger. However, they are a good size for how rich they are.
Little Chocolate Pots
Find these in Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Ocado, Co-Op, Wholefoods Market. The Vegan Kind Supermarket Online. RRP £2.50.
Delicious small bite desserts. Very rich in flavour and super smooth creamy texture. I do rate these for the product but they are on the small side.
Also worth looking out for The Coconut Collaborative free from rice pudding!
4. M&S Plant Kitchen
Chocolate Mousse Pot
Honestly, there is nothing I would change about this chocolate mousse.
It is creamy and thick and, of course, chocolatey AND it is decent portion size. The mousse is topped with a thin layer of chocolate ganache (see picture above).
Cookies
Find these in Marks and Spencer. £0.75 per cookie. £1.75 per mousse.
As per the review by @veegboi ”M&S [cookies are great] because of the texture combined with the creamier milkier tasting chocolate”.
5. Oggs
Cakes and Cupcakes
Find these in Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, The Vegan Kind Supermarket Online.
Many flavour varieties including: Zesty Lemon, Chocolate Fudge, Victoria Sponge, Vanilla and they do them in mini cake (bottom photo), cupcake (top photo) and full size cake varieties.
Considering the Oggs cakes have such a long shelf life I expected them to be really dry, but to my surprise, they were very moist! There is also a decent icing to cake ratio because there’s nothing worse than not enough icing to cake right?!
Overall these make a great option if you want to have some cakes in the cupboard in case you have visitors over the festive period as they will keep fresh for days! However, they can be on the pricey side, so maybe just save them for a treat.
6. Sainsbury’s
Mousse
Find these in Sainsbury’s. RRP £1.75 (2 portions).
The fluffy texture and flavour of the chocolate mousse is great, and I would buy this one again. The strawberry one is good too but tastes ‘artificial’. The lemon one is the same ‘fake lemon’ taste but the biscuit on the bottom of the lemon one is a nice touch. I liked the fluffy texture of all of them.
I’d buy the chocolate flavour again but I’d probably give the fruity ones a miss next time.
7. Plant Pioneers
Chocolate & Caramel Pots and Raspberry Desserts
Find these in Sainsbury’s. RRP £2 (2 portions).
New Veganuary 2021 desserts from the infamous Plant Pioneers brand in Sainsbury’s. I haven’t personally tried these but nothing in this range has let me down so far so I have high hopes!
8. Aldi
Melt in the Middle Puddings
Find these in Aldi. RRP £1.79.
In 2 flavours: Chocolate or Salted Caramel. For sweet-toothed vegans who fancy a rich dessert, Aldi has the answer while being super budget-friendly! Best served with vegan ice cream. To quote @celinesveganeats ’10/10, sensational, so moist and gooey’. I mean if that review doesn’t sell it to you, I don’t know what will, haha!
9. Kent and Fraser
Brownies and Blondies
Find these in Sainsbury’s. RRP £1.
These long shelf life brownies taste surprisingly good! And they make a great choice if you want something to chuck in your bag for a day out or for a picnic. Plus they will keep fresh in your cupboard for weeks ready for a rainy day.
They also do a vegan blondie version but personally, I prefer the double chocolate brownie (pictured).
10. 2 Ingredient Cake Hack
Find these ingredients in most supermarkets.
This cake hack is perfect for even the most beginner baker.
Maybe I am cheating a little in adding this one in but I think it is simple enough to count as a ‘ready-made supermarket pudding’.
Check out my post ‘2 INGREDIENT EASY VEGAN CAKE HACK‘ for instructions on how to make this super easy cake.
All you need is:
- 1 can of Coca-Cola
- 1 box of Betty Crocker Chocolate Cake Mix or similar supermarket alternative
11. Vegan Ice Cream
Read my full blog post ‘BEST VEGAN ICE CREAM IN THE UK YOU NEED TO TRY‘.
Long are the days of just sorbet as an option for vegans, there are now 10s of vegan ice cream brands available. From luxury high-end brands to supermarket dupes, in practically every flavour you could want!
12. Alpro
Dessert Yogurt Pots
Find these in Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Ocado, Asda, Morrisons.
As one of the first dairy-free brands to emerge, Alpro is certainly on it with their vegan yoghurt and ice creams. Their yoghurt pots come in many flavours including, dark and milk chocolate, coconut, caramel, vanilla, and hazelnut chocolate. Plus NEW flavours [PISTACHIO or DOUBLE CHOCOLATE] ALMOND MOUSSE WITH GANACHE LAYER.
My personal favourite is their devilishly dark chocolate yoghurt pots (top photo), which are rich and creamy. They serve excellently as they come or with additional extras such as vegan chocolate, honeycomb, biscuit pieces or marshmallows.
And you can even freeze them for approx 90 minutes before serving to get a delicious semi-frozen dessert!
13. GU
Cheesecakes
Find these in Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Ocado, Asda, Co-Op, Morrisons. RRP £3.50.
In four flavours: Lemon, strawberry & rhubarb, salted caramel, and chocolate & vanilla.
My favourite, as a self-confessed chocoholic, is the chocolate one, closely followed by the salted caramel (which reminds me of butterscotch angel delight, in the best way!). The texture of the vanilla coconut cream and the chocolate ganache is heavenly ontop of the biscuity base.
Plus, you can keep the glass ramekin to reuse!
14. Freaks of Nature
Bramley Apple Crumble, Cherry Bakewell, Chocolate Fudge Pudding, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Lemon Mousse, Chocolate Mousse.
Find these in Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, Co-Op.
To quote Sian of @theinnocentvegan ”If you haven’t tried the freaks of nature desserts yet, then you are missing out. I’ve got the biggest sweet tooth and need my daily dessert – the sticky toffee pudding is so good I crave them constantly.”
15. Morrison’s
Accidentally Vegan Doughnuts
Find these in Morrisons Bakery section. RRP £0.60.
The majority of fresh bakery doughnuts are accidentally vegan – Please check ingredients with your local store.
As well as being DELICIOUS they are also super cheap at around 50-60p for a pack of 5. You really can’t go wrong with these doughnuts!
16. GRO and Co-Op Bakery
Find these in Co-op Food. RRP £1.60 for 4 cookies.
The GRO range has many plant-based alternatives for all things from ready meals and on-the-go sandwiches as well as these new ‘bakery style’ chocolate chip cookies. Plus they already have these donuts in the bakery section which are ‘accidentally vegan’ (check ingredients with your local store).
17. Deliciously Ella
Fudgy Chocolate Brownie
Find these in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose. RRP £3.
Review coming soon on my Instagram so make sure you follow me @virtually_vegan for an update this week! They are in my freezer awaiting judgment!
Apple & Blackberry Crumble
Find these in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose. RRP £3.
To quote @veganfounder ”The crumble was so yummy, the texture was great. But the cinnamon was a bit overpowering. Feels like you’re having a homemade dessert and everything is natural using dates and coconut sugar, along with of course the apple and blackberries for sweetness. I would buy this again.”
18. Kirsty’s
Apple Pie, Carrot Cake, Golden Billionaire Slice
Find these in Waitrose, Tesco. RRP £3.
Not one. Not two. But three different flavours of readymade vegan desserts to go from Kirsty’s. For any taste preferences. I know I’d be choosing the chocolate every day but they are all some traditional classics… but vegan! Plus all three are GLUTEN FREE!
19. Lazy Day
Chocolate Tiffin, Millionaire’s Shortbread and Rocky Road
Find these in Sainsbury’s. RRP £2.
A great hybrid between a biscuit and a full-on dessert. perfect for light desserts or snacks with a good old cuppa tea. The Tiffin also comes in mini bites which are great for sharing or as part of some movie-night nibbles.
20. Accidentally Vegan Biscuits
There are so many biscuits you can find in the supermarkets that are accidentally vegan that I would have to dedicate a whole blog post into listing them all! So check the ingredients and see if your old favourites are actually free of animal products.
Some of my favourite finds include: Lotus Biscoff and Biscoff creams, most bourbons, rich tea, Tesco own dark chocolate covered digestives, party rings, Oreos, Jammie dodgers and more. Obviously check the ingredients before you buy.
21. Vegan Chocolate
The vegan chocolate game has come along leaps and bounds in the last few years! When I first went vegan the only options were for an accidentally vegan dark chocolate but now there are many different brands popping up with vegan varieties.
Some of my favourite vegan chocolate finds include: Galaxy, Nomo, Vego, Moo Free.
Quick reviews of everything in the photos:
- Vantastic white choc and almond bar. Similar to the white choc Vego bar but nuttier and, in my opinion, better. £1.75 each (also in cocoa hazelnut).
- MallowOut bars. Bit weird and I probably wouldn’t choose this over a regular choc bar but surprisingly nice. £1.89 (also in strawberry).
- Fabulous Free From Factory sea-salted covered fudge bites. WOW, these are delightful! Would get these again and they are way better than the fudge on its own. £1.85.
- MummyMeagz Rocky Roads. I loved them. My favourite was the salt and cinder toffee one (black). They are more of a soft rocky road (a bit like the Costa Coffee one) which personally I like. However, pricey at £2.15.
- Vego bar. My firm fav vegan chocolate bar. I’m sure you’ve all tried it by now, but if you haven’t, you NEED to! £3.49 for a large bar, or £1.99 for a small bar.
- Moo Free Bunnycomb bar. Another one of my absolute fav vegan choccies. If you miss honeycomb in choccy then you NEED to try this one because it is a dream, especially dipped in a cuppa tea! – 85p each.
- NOMO. A very creamy chocolate bar. An all-rounder, and perfect for dipping in tea. 90p.
- Vegan Galaxy bar. Delicious but very pricey. Lots of my non-vegan friends loved this one. The orange flavour tastes similar to Terry’s chocolate orange. £3.00 a bar.
